  • EdTechLens:

Why did you choose to specialize in the study of primates?

Dr. Mireya Mayor: Well, anthropology is the study of man, and primates are man’s closest living relative. And it was again during that class that I started learning about primates that were on the verge of extinction. Some of them we knew nothing about – we had no photographs of them. There were literally just a couple of hundred of them left in the wild, if that many! That’s what got me motivated to help those animals.

  • EdTechLens: What's the most challenging part of that job?

Dr. Mireya Mayor: When you’re working with wild animals, you never quite know what’s going to happen, or if you’re going to find the animals. You don’t know if it’s going to downpour and rain all day where it makes it difficult to track the animals. So it can be very challenging at times just finding the animal.
