Did you know Howler monkeys are the loudest animals in the world? They don’t make high pitched noises, but their rumbling echo-like howls can be heard up to 3 miles away in the rainforest.
Howlers hangout in family-like groups called troops. They stay in tree tops where there are plenty of fresh leaves to eat. It’s easier to guard their territory since they can see the whole rainforest from above. If something suspicious is spotted, they howl to defend their property.
Howlers also do a lot of calling each morning and night to let troops know where their competitors are. If you are sleeping in the rainforest near howlers, they will probably wake you at sunrise as they howl and howl. They do this to protect food supply and their territory. Although their main food source is leaves, they also love to eat fruit and flowers. They hold their favorite foods close to make sure no one steals them.
